TalkTalk Present Porn Filter Choice

80% of TalkTalk customers said it was a good thing.

TalkTalk have taken a giant leap in protecting children from viewing pornographic images online by forcing their customers to choose whether to activate their filtering service HomeSafe or not.

HomeSafe was launched in 2011 and in 2012 all new customers had to decide whether to activate the service or not upon sign up to the internet provider.

“We think it’s for customers to decide what level of protection, if any, they apply, but asking them to make a choice prompts them to think about the issue and consider their family’s needs,” Alex Birtles, Head of External Comms for TalkTalk, explained in a TalkTalk blog post.

“We’ve been doing this by directing customers into their account settings, where they’ve been presented with an unavoidable choice. We pre-tick the ‘on’ option, but it’s the customer’s choice,” Birtles adds.

Like most filters however, HomeSafe does not have the ability to block websites accessed via a web proxy or a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
